On November 10, 2025, an online lecture by Professor Sebastian Gechert of Chemnitz University of Technology was held on the topic “Education, Institutions and Economic Growth”.
On November 10, 2025, Professor, Dr. Sebastian Gechert from the Department of Macroeconomics of Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany) gave an online lecture on the topic “Education, Institutions and Economic Growth” for graduate and undergraduate students studying in the educational program C1 “Economics and International Economic Relations” (specialization C1.01 “Economics”).
Professor Sebastian Gechert presented the main empirical patterns of economic growth in different countries from the beginning of the 19th century to 2022. Based on the key indicators of the Solow growth model, the issue of convergence under the same rates of technology introduction for countries with different levels of economic development was considered. The role of education in promoting human capital development was further analyzed. In the short term, human capital accumulates gradually against the backdrop of a declining labor supply, while in the long term, the accumulation of human capital provides positive dynamics of economic growth.
Professor Sebastian Gehert’s lecture was a significant intellectual contribution to the professional development of graduate and undergraduate students, deepening their understanding of the relationship between education, institutions, and economic growth. The lecture effectively combined a thorough theoretical analysis with practical examples, which allowed participants to better understand the role of human capital in shaping long-term economic development trajectories.
In addition, the lecture supplemented the knowledge of graduate students within the framework of the academic discipline “State Programming of Human Capital Development in the National Economy”, illustrating the critical importance of education and social infrastructure for stimulating economic growth. The lecture material is also extremely relevant for the course “Microeconomic Analysis”, since individual decisions regarding investment in education and the formation of human capital directly affect the productivity, incentives and behavioral choices of economic agents.
The event was organized on the initiative of Marianna Kichurchak, Professor of the Department of Economics of Ukraine, and Ostap Vatamanyuk, Professor of the Department of Economic Theory and guarantor of the educational and scientific program C1 “Economics and International Economic Relations” (specialization C1.01 “Economics”).
The lecture took place within the framework of the joint project “Lernbrücke Chemnitz–Lviv 2025”, which is implemented by the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in cooperation with the Chemnitz University of Technology within the framework of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) program “Projects in the field of higher education to support the educational process in Ukrainian universities through digitalization”, with the support of the Harald Christ Foundation for Democracy and Diversity.
We express our sincere gratitude to Professor Sebastian Gehert for his informative lecture, scientifically sound explanations, and openness to discussion.
